A California smog check averages $58.97 to $74.36 depending on station type, or $69.16 overall, in BAR's August 2026 report, and every station must also charge an $8.25 state certificate fee when the car passes. As of October 2026, smog check coupons on SmogCheckDeals start at $19.75, with a median of $39.75 before the certificate.

How much does a smog check cost by station type?

A California smog check averaged $69.16 across all stations in August 2026, according to BAR's monthly Smog Check Executive Summary. Non-STAR test-only stations were cheapest at $58.97 on average, and non-STAR test-and-repair shops were the most expensive at $74.36. The $8.25 state certificate is charged separately when the car passes.

The test your car gets matters too. Vehicles checked through the on-board computer (OIS, most 2000 and newer cars) averaged $65.42. Older vehicles on the BAR-97 tailpipe test averaged $72.90.

Read these as a benchmark, not a quote. BAR asks inspectors to enter their price once a month, and the report itself says the figures "may or may not include any discounts and may not reflect the actual inspection cost." The BAR-97 software also cannot accept a price above $99.

How much does a smog check cost with a coupon?

A smog check with a coupon usually costs $36.75 to $41.75 before the certificate, based on the 95 live special-price smog check coupons stations publish on SmogCheckDeals as of October 7, 2026. The median is $39.75, the lowest $19.75 and the highest $59.95. Every one of them is below BAR's $69.16 statewide average.

Another 63 coupons take a fixed amount off the regular price instead, from $5 to $30 off, with a median of $19.75 off.

These are the prices stations publish on SmogCheckDeals, before the $8.25 certificate unless a coupon says otherwise. A $39.75 coupon usually means $48 at the counter once the certificate is added, still well under the $69.16 statewide average.

Is the $8.25 certificate included in the smog check price?

The $8.25 smog certificate is usually not included in an advertised smog check price. It is a state fee that every licensed California station must charge when a car passes, on top of the station's own inspection price. Coupon prices on SmogCheckDeals are before the certificate unless the coupon says otherwise, so add $8.25 to compare.

A car that fails gets no certificate, so the fee applies only to a pass. The certificate is sent to DMV electronically and stays valid for 90 days. You can confirm it on our smog check history lookup.

BAR's report does not say whether inspectors count the certificate in the averages they enter. The written estimate settles it: BAR requires the station to give you one, and you must authorize it before the inspection starts. Ask for the out-the-door total.

Why do smog check prices vary?

Smog check prices vary in California because BAR does not regulate them. "Inspection prices are not regulated by BAR," the agency says, so each station sets its own. BAR's August 2026 averages also differ by license type, STAR status and the test your car needs, from $58.97 at non-STAR test-only stations to $74.36 at non-STAR test-and-repair shops.

License type

A STAR smog check cost $63.34 on average at STAR test-only stations and $71.03 at STAR test-and-repair stations in August 2026, according to BAR. With a coupon on SmogCheckDeals, the median STAR price is $39.75 at test-only stations and $39.25 at test-and-repair stations, before the $8.25 certificate, as of October 2026.

If your renewal notice says "Smog Certification Required at a STAR station," only a STAR station can certify the car. Either STAR type works. You can save money on a California smog check by using a coupon, choosing a test-only station, and avoiding a failed test. Practical ways to pay less:

• Use a coupon. Show it before the station writes the estimate, and check its conditions against your vehicle.
• Compare station types. Non-STAR test-only stations averaged $58.97 and STAR test-only $63.34 in August 2026. A test-only station works unless your car needs repairs first.
• Ask about the retest. No state rule makes a retest free. Many stations set their own free or discounted retest policy, so ask before you pay.

• Watch for add-ons. A low posted price with a mandatory extra charge is not a low price.

Do newer cars pay a fee instead of a smog check?

Newer cars pay a fee instead of a renewal smog check in California. Gasoline, hybrid and alternative-fuel vehicles eight model years old or newer pay a smog abatement fee with registration: $20 a year for the newest six model years and $25 a year for model years seven and eight. Diesel vehicles get no model-year exception.

BAR's rule of thumb is to add 8 to the model year. A 2020 car needs its first renewal smog check in 2028. Is a smog check retest free in California?

A smog check retest is not free by law in California. No state rule requires stations to retest a failed car at no charge. Many stations offer a free or discounted retest as their own policy, often within a set number of days and sometimes only if they did the repairs, so ask before you hand over the keys.
