Stations with coupons by city
128 California cities have at least one station with a live coupon. Each city page lists every licensed station there, coupon or not, with hours and STAR status.
How to use a smog check coupon
- 1Check your DMV renewal notice. If it says the vehicle must be tested at a STAR station, pick a coupon from a STAR station.
- 2Read the coupon's fine print: which vehicles it covers, which days it is good, and whether the $8.25 certificate is included.
- 3Print the coupon or show it on your phone at the counter, before the inspection starts.
- 4Confirm the price on the written estimate. The station must give you one, and you must authorize it before the inspection begins (BAR).
What is the average smog check price in California?
California smog checks averaged $69.16 in BAR’s August 2026 report, as self-reported by stations, from $58.97 at non-STAR test-only stations to $74.36 at non-STAR test-and-repair shops, plus the $8.25 certificate when the car passes. Prices aren’t regulated, so each station sets its own.
Inspection prices are not regulated in California. BAR’s Smog Check Executive Summary for August 2026 reports what stations entered as their price that month. The certificate fee of $8.25 is added on a pass.
| Station type | Average price, August 2026 |
|---|---|
| STAR test-only | $63.34 |
| STAR test-and-repair | $71.03 |
| Non-STAR test-only | $58.97 |
| Non-STAR test-and-repair | $74.36 |
| All stations | $69.16 |
BAR notes that stations self-report these prices and they may or may not include discounts. For more on what drives the price, see how much a smog check costs in California.
Frequently asked questions
No. California does not offer free smog inspections, and the Bureau of Automotive Repair does not regulate inspection prices, so each station sets its own. Every station must also charge the $8.25 state certificate fee when the vehicle passes. A coupon is the simplest way to pay less: the ones on this page are live offers published by the stations themselves.
It depends on the station. BAR's own monthly report put the average inspection at $69.16 in August 2026, from $58.97 at non-STAR test-only stations to $74.36 at non-STAR test-and-repair shops, before the $8.25 certificate. Coupon prices on this page are often well under that average.
Only when the coupon says so. Each coupon on SmogCheckDeals shows whether the station included the $8.25 certificate in the price. When it does not say, assume the certificate is added at the counter when the vehicle passes.
Yes, if the station is STAR certified. A coupon does not change which station type your vehicle needs: if your DMV renewal notice says the vehicle must be tested at a STAR station, use a coupon from a STAR station. Each city page shows which stations are STAR certified.
Read the fine print before you go. Some coupons cover only certain vehicles or model years, some are good only on certain days, and some can't be combined with another offer. The station's estimate, which BAR requires them to give you before the test starts, is where to confirm the price.
