Smog check stations open on Sunday in California

400 smog check stations in 154 California cities list Sunday hours, most commonly opening around 9 AM and closing around 4 PM.

Hours come from each station’s Google listing, refreshed within the last six months. Car dealerships and gas stations are left out, because their listed hours usually describe the showroom or the pumps rather than the smog bay, and so are listings that claim 24-hour Sundays. Call before you drive over.

Before you go on a Sunday

  • Bring the DMV renewal notice if you have it, and check whether it says the vehicle needs a STAR station (what STAR means).
  • Make sure the check engine light is off. BAR is clear that a vehicle will not pass with it on (BAR).
  • Some coupons are good only on certain days. Check the days on any smog check coupon before you count on it for a Sunday visit.
  • If the car might fail, a test-and-repair station can diagnose and fix it under the same roof; a test-only station can only test it.

Some are. 400 of the 3,034 smog shops with recently checked hours on SmogCheckDeals (13%, not counting dealerships and gas stations) list Sunday hours, typically from 9 AM to 4 PM. Hours vary by station, so check the time before you go.

Yes. 266 of the stations open on Sunday are STAR certified, so a vehicle whose DMV notice requires a STAR station can be tested on a Sunday too.

Yes. A passing certificate is sent to the DMV electronically, whatever the day, and stays valid for 90 days. BAR updates its public inspection history once a day at midnight, so a Sunday result shows up there by Monday.

About the same as any other day: BAR says an inspection usually takes about 30 minutes. Any wait for a free bay comes on top of that.
