Smog check coupon vs walk-in price: which is cheaper?

Friday, October 30, 2026

A coupon is usually cheaper. The median smog check coupon on SmogCheckDeals was $39.75 before the certificate as of October 2026, and BAR's September 2026 report put the average inspection at $69.66. Either way, a pass adds the $8.25 state certificate, so that median coupon comes to about $48.

The two numbers aren't a perfect match. BAR's average comes from prices stations report, and BAR says they "may or may not include any discounts." It also covers every station, while our median covers only stations with a priced coupon. Read the gap as a guide, not as your savings at one shop.

How do coupon and walk-in prices compare?

PriceAmountWith the $8.25 certificate
Median coupon on SmogCheckDeals, Oct 2026$39.75$48.00
BAR average, all stations, Sep 2026$69.66$77.91
BAR average, non-STAR test-only$56.77$65.02
BAR average, non-STAR test-and-repair$75.26$83.51

Some coupons already include the certificate, so check each one. Current prices by county are in our price report.

When is a coupon not the better deal?

A coupon doesn't help if your car doesn't fit its terms, or if a station nearby charges less anyway. Check these first:

  • Model year and vehicle type. Some coupons cover only certain vehicles or model years.
  • Days. Some are good only on certain days.
  • The certificate. A low price may leave out the $8.25.
  • STAR. If your DMV notice requires a STAR station, a coupon from a non-STAR station can't help. See STAR station vs regular.
  • Repairs. A low test price at a test-only station doesn't include diagnosis if the car fails. See test-only vs test-and-repair.

How do you make sure you get the coupon price?

Prices aren't set by the state. BAR says "Inspection prices are not regulated by BAR," and the station must give you an estimate that you authorize before the inspection. So:

  1. Find a coupon on the coupons page or your city page.
  2. Call and give your car's year and fuel type. Ask for the total with the certificate.
  3. Show the coupon before the test, and read the estimate before you approve it.

What if there is no coupon near you?

Call two or three stations and compare the total. Test-only stations averaged less than test-and-repair stations in BAR's report, so start there if you expect to pass. Our guide to what a smog check costs covers the other ways to pay less.
