Only some Jiffy Lube locations in California do smog checks. As of October 2026, our directory lists 9 Jiffy Lube locations that hold a Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) smog check license, all test-and-repair stations and none STAR certified. Only a location with its own BAR license can certify your car, so check before you go.

We found these by matching business names in our directory of licensed smog stations, so treat every count in this post as "at least." A location licensed under a different business name would not show up.

Does Jiffy Lube do smog checks in California?

Jiffy Lube does smog checks in California only at individual locations that hold a BAR smog check station license. As of October 2026, our directory lists at least 9 licensed Jiffy Lube locations, all test-and-repair stations and none STAR certified. If a location is not on that list, check its BAR license before you drive over.

A smog check in California has to be done by a station licensed to perform Smog Check inspections. A shop without that license cannot issue the certificate DMV needs, whatever brand is on the sign. That makes the license the only thing that matters, not the chain.

Which Jiffy Lube locations do smog checks?

The Jiffy Lube locations with a smog check license in our directory are in Santa Maria, Santa Barbara (two), Atascadero, Goleta, San Luis Obispo, Paso Robles, Red Bluff and Redding, as of October 2026. All nine are test-and-repair stations, so they can inspect and do emissions repairs, but none is STAR certified.

The licensed locations:

None is in Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, the Inland Empire or the Bay Area. If you live there, a dedicated smog station is the practical choice.

Because none is STAR certified, a Jiffy Lube in this list cannot certify a car whose DMV renewal notice says "Smog Certification Required at a STAR station." For that, see our STAR smog check guide.

Does Valvoline do smog checks?

Valvoline does smog checks in California only where a location holds its own BAR smog license. As of October 2026, our directory lists one: Valvoline Express Care in Antioch, a STAR certified test-and-repair station. We found no licensed location under the Valvoline Instant Oil Change name, though a location licensed under another business name would not appear in our count.

The Antioch location's page is Valvoline Express Care, Antioch. Because it is STAR certified, it can also certify cars directed to STAR stations.

Does Costco do smog checks?

Costco does not appear in our directory of licensed California smog stations as of October 2026. We also found no licensed smog station under the Take 5 or Walmart names. If a store offers car services, it still needs a BAR smog check station license to test and certify vehicles, and none of these names matched a licensed station.

For a low price without a membership, the smog check coupons page lists live coupons from licensed stations, cheapest first.

Do Pep Boys, Midas, Meineke or Firestone do smog checks?

Some Pep Boys, Midas, Meineke and Firestone locations do smog checks in California, but not all. As of October 2026, our directory lists at least 18 licensed Pep Boys locations (5 STAR certified), 8 Midas or Speedee-Midas (3 STAR), 6 Meineke and 3 Firestone Complete Auto Care. Every one is a test-and-repair station.

A few examples from our directory: Pep Boys #660 in Costa Mesa and Pep Boys #978 in San Diego are STAR certified. Pep Boys #778 in Corona and Speedee-Midas in Elk Grove are also listed. The three Firestone locations are in Camp Pendleton and San Diego.

Four more Pep Boys locations show STAR certification suspended, so they are counted as licensed but not STAR.

How do you check if a shop can do smog checks?

You check whether a California shop can do smog checks by looking up its license on BAR's Auto Shop Locator or finding it in our directory. A shop must hold a BAR smog check station license, as test-only or test-and-repair, to inspect and certify. The license, not the brand on the sign, decides whether it can issue your certificate.

Three steps to check any shop, including Jiffy Lube or Valvoline: look up its smog license in BAR's Auto Shop Locator, match the license to your DMV notice (STAR if the notice says so), and get a written estimate that says whether the $8.25 certificate is included

Three quick checks:

  1. Search the business on BAR's Auto Shop Locator and confirm a smog check station license.
  2. Check whether it is STAR certified if your DMV renewal notice asks for a STAR station.
  3. Call and ask for the out-the-door price, including the $8.25 certificate.

You can also search by city on the smog check near me page or browse the statewide directory.

How much does a Jiffy Lube smog check cost?

A Jiffy Lube smog check costs whatever that individual licensed location charges, because BAR does not regulate inspection prices in California. We do not have published prices from any chain. For comparison, BAR's August 2026 report put the statewide average at $69.16, and every station must also charge the $8.25 certificate when the car passes.

Test-and-repair stations, which is what every chain location above holds, averaged $71.03 (STAR) and $74.36 (non-STAR) in BAR's report. Test-only stations averaged less. As of October 2026, special-price smog check coupons on SmogCheckDeals have a median of $39.75 before the certificate. The full breakdown is in how much a smog check costs in California, and county-by-county coupon prices are in our California smog check price report.

BAR requires every station to give you an estimate, which you must authorize before the inspection starts. That is where to confirm the price.

Is a chain shop or a dedicated smog station better?

A chain shop and a dedicated smog station run the same California smog check if both hold a BAR license. The difference is the license type. A test-and-repair station, like every chain location in our directory, can fix a failure on site. A test-only station only inspects, and test-only stations averaged less in BAR's August 2026 report.

If your car is likely to pass, a test-only station or a coupon is usually the cheaper route. If it might need repairs, a test-and-repair station keeps the fix and the retest in one place. We compare the two in test-only vs test-and-repair stations. For city listings, start with Los Angeles, San Diego or Sacramento.
