When your car needs a STAR station
Only a STAR station can certify a car when the DMV renewal notice says “Smog Certification Required at a STAR station”, or after a test flags it as a gross polluter. Any other car can go to any licensed station, STAR or not, and the certificate is the same. The test-only stations below inspect without selling repairs; the test-and-repair ones can fix a failure on the spot. More in what a STAR smog check is.
“Star” in the name is not STAR certification
One shop in Garden Grove has “Star” in the name but isnot STAR certified in BAR’s records, so it can’t certify a STAR-directed car: Star Smog Check Center. Check any shop’s standing at bar.ca.gov.
